Bruceâs gaze lingered on the shadowy figure soaring through the sky. He recognised the silhouette, he just didnât want to believe it. An eagle.
Eagles werenât a bird that he often shared the sky with. Eagles were birds of prey. Hunters. Eagles owned the day and owls owned the night, and neither were a big problem for bats. Normally, as Bruce knew, eagles preferred to hunt for ground animals. Animals like rats and mice and worms. Animals like guinea pigsâŠ
That eagle probably couldnât believe their luck. A free fluffy meal right there in the sky waiting to be eaten.
Bruce held Ginny tight, still hoping that maybe, just maybe, the eagle hadnât spotted her.
âGet ready,â Bruce told Ginny. âThatâs not a parrot.â
âWhat is it?â she asked. âI canât see well from here.â
âAn eagle,â he said, trying to keep his voice calm so as to not panic her.
The bad news made Ginnyâs ears red hot.
Anything but an eagleâŠ
For the moment, Bruce didnât want to change speed or direction and potentially draw any extra unwanted attention. He just tried to keep it steady and wait and see what unfolded next.
Bruce snuck another look at the nearby eagle. It seemed to just be cruising. Maybe they were going to get away with thisâŠ
âWe might be ok,â said Bruce.
Ginny searched for a glimpse of the eagle, but, strangely, the eagle wasnât anywhere to be found.
Bruce caught the movement just in time as the eagle came flying through the air. The eagle was charging in from the side. Bruce managed to lift up and pull Ginny out of the way as the eagle snapped its beak at nothing, missing Ginny by the length of foxâs nose.
Bruce made the quick decision to bolt to cover. He and Ginny were sitting ducks up there in the open sky. He held Ginny tight and began a nose drive through the air. He needed to get to the trees!
From Ginnyâs position, all she could see was the rapidly approaching green of the forest below. It almost felt like she was just straight falling.
As Bruce raced for cover, the eagle geared up to try and strike again.
The eagle soared through the air with its wings tucked in tight. The bird of prey dipped underneath Bruce and tried to snatch up Ginny with its bear-like claws.
Ginny reacted instantly and launched an attack of rapid kicks at the fearsome eagle. Bruce could barely keep hold of Ginny as she lunged her comparatively tiny claws at the eagle and fought with everything she had. The eagle clipped Ginnyâs leg with a swipe but Ginny managed to land a solid kick square in the middle of the eagleâs beak.
The eagle let out a pained squawk and briefly backed off. It looked livid.
Bruce sped up. He was almost at the trees.
As the eagle began its next charge, Bruce just managed to make it to the tip top of the forest. He ducked and weaved as he dove down between branches. Behind him, the eagleâs broad wingspan didnât have a chance.
The bird of prey let out a final furious squawk of anger and pulled up just short of the trees.
The shadows of the forest had become Bruce and Ginnyâs protection.
They were safe⊠for now.
