Bruce and Ginny soared above the forest, fresh air rushing over them. As they made their way through the clear crisp sky, Ginny had never felt such a thrill. She was filled with awe. Her unstoppable grin stretched from ear to ear.
With that said, she felt a strange emotion as she looked down at the forest beneath her. She thought of all of the little animals down there beneath those trees. She thought of the lives they lived. She thought of the homes, the food, the danger. It was all there, and yet it was just one tiny piece of the puzzle. An endless puzzle.
She looked left and right and all she could see was forest. It all just went on and on. She had never really thought about it before, just how big this world of theirs was. How many other shrubs full of guinea pigs filled their forest?
While Ginny’s head was spinning about the vastness of the world, Bruce’s attention was drawn to more pressing matters. His wing was aching. It was red hot, like he was sitting too close to a fire.
“How much further?” he asked.
Ginny was lost in thought and didn’t hear a word.
“How much further?” he asked again.
“Oh, it’s not too far now,” she said. “It should be just near those mountains.”
Bruce looked ahead and gulped. Dig deep, he told himself. Keep pushing.
They continued on across the blue sky.
As they flew, Ginny noticed a strange shape of movement off in the distance. It almost looked like a moving rainbow. She looked a little closer. She realised it was a flock of birds and her heart suddenly dropped. Fear took over and she began to panic.
“Bruce, look out!” she said. “Over there, birds!”
Bruce checked them out. It was a small flock of green and red migrating parrots. He didn’t bat an eye.
“They’re just parrots,” he told Ginny calmly. “Don’t worry, they wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
Ginny couldn’t help but still feel nervous. Like all guinea pigs, she was raised to fear birds more than any other critter on earth.
As the birds approached, she was able to get a better look at them. They were cruising together at a steady pace. As they passed, a few of the parrots looked to Ginny and Bruce and were completely and utterly puzzled by what they were seeing. Bruce couldn’t help but laugh.
The parrots carried on along their way and the sky was Bruce and Ginny’s once again, at least for a while.
Continuing forward, a new shadow appeared in the corner of Ginny’s eye.
“They left one of the parrots behind,” said Ginny.
Bruce looked over and this time it was his heart that dropped.
